'You supreme specimen of sexual inadequacy', 'You look like a "before" picture in a Charles Atlas ad, you spineless molusc!' Andy Kaufman, performance artist, provocateur, anti-comedian knew how to illicit a response. After successfully beating a lady wrestler on Saturday Night Live in 1979 he insulted, then challenged, the females of America to take him on in the ring. Anyone who beat him would win $1000 and Kaufman would shave his head. Although partly a fetish and a way to meet ladies, Andy also had a genuine love of wrestling and of course a strong desire to mess with people. New book Dear Andy Kaufman I Hate Your Guts! compiles many of the letters and photos sent in response. There are missives from housewives, small children and a couple from a strange man with a penchant for bald headed ladies. The book works as a kind of time capsule from the period, there is real enjoyment to be gleaned from the pictured fashion and slang of 20 years ago. It also works as a slightly voyeuristic look at people's endearing eccentricities. Any fan of the amazing Found (a magazine/ book made up entirely of notes, photos, letters and drawings found and sent in to the editors - highly recommended!) will enjoy this too. While surely a must have for Kaufman fans, many more will enjoy the silliness, creativity and personality found in the scribbled notes, typed letters (remember those?) and muscle flexing photos on display.
