We'll be bringing the early results of this project
to you very soon (some of which can be read in Nude issue seven
and issue eight. In the meantime,
here's what it's all about: please do contribute. We're having
a great time with this and everyone who's written in so far has
said that they've loved to relive this time in their lives. If
you write in, please include contact details. Thanks!
As what is intended as an affectionate celebration
of all those who kicked out the jamms and served in the noble
cause of musical mayhem, we're seeking to document an alternative
history of rock and roll. Were hoping to build up an archive of
bands who for one reason or another fell by the wayside on the
long and winding road to fame and fortune. Ultimately we want
to explore - in words and pictures - the very essence of what
it means to be a member of an aspiring beat combo, and also focus
on the notion of being in a band as a rite of passge. So if you
were in a group - no matter how good or bad - now could be your
time to shine again.
To take part in this project (some of which will
be published in every issue of Nude) you would ideally need to
provide us with a good quality publicity portrait or performance
photograph, together with a short band biography/story (although
if you don't have a photo we're stil happy to accept submissions).
Biog should begin with the following essential details…
name, town, years of formation and break up etc. The biogs should
make for an entertaining read, but please try to avoid all of
the usual cliches such as 'we played out first gig in front of
two men and a dog' etc. Also no laddish tales of drug and alcohol
fuelled excess. Instead, they shoud ideally convey a sese of youthful
naivety and / or arrogance, together with accounts of how you
may have struggled to reconcile discrepancies between overreaching
ambition and actual talent.
The photos shuld ideally convey the genre of music purveyed by
the band-the more cliched the better. Think preening big-aired
goths, punks posed against graffiti backgrounds, new romantic
excess, northern metallers in spandex, old skool hip hoppers in
adidas, baggy bands in…baggy clothes. Oh, and we're also
seeking demos/live recordings.
This project is intended as a postive celebration of everything
that goes with being in a band, andshould not be taken as an opportunity
to settle old scores or slag off former band mates. Also, don't
be put off if you're not a writer: it's the story that counts!
